A year's photos

          TERRY RODGERS writes:

          Wall calendars are almost obsolete. Most folks have phone apps to keep track of their appointments and concert dates. However, being an old-fashioned kinda person, I have created a nifty photo calendar for 2023 that I am offering only to the 919 Gang, not the general public. If you have seen my photography on my Facebook page, you know I am not a beginner. This is the 8th year I've produced a custom calendar for friends and family. If you send me your address and $20 (twenty) to cover my cost for printing and mailing, I'll send you one. This is not a money-maker for me. As a borderline egomaniac with deep-seeded inferiority issues, I love to show off my artistic endeavors to validate my existence. The calendar is 8.5X11 inches and is spiral bound. Perfect for hanging on the refrigerator or office wall. And of course, all of the photos were captured by me and not stolen from a retired Union-Tribune photographer.

 

          REBER: I have seen many of Terry’s photos on Facebook, and they are excellent. This is not some guy with a Kodak Brownie.

Keeping the fall color photo series alive, here are a few shots from Thanksgiving in Seattle.

Our oldest, Daniel, lives in the city’s Eastlake neighborhood where some of these were taken. Daniel was our U-T baby, born in 1993 during my time covering economics and finance, shortly after the merger.

There are also pictures from the Seattle arboretum, officially the University of Washington Botanic Gardens, an impressive urban preserve just a few minutes from Daniel’s apartment.

It’s a beautiful and vibrant city that we are just getting to know.

We had one day of torrential rain and we hunkered down with coffee and books to the melodic sounds of the downpour. I finished Agent Josephine, a history of the singer-dancer Josephine Baker’s formidable efforts spying on the Nazis in France and Morocco during World War II.

Say hi, Bob

Thanks, Jack, for mentioning Bob Dietrich, when you wished him a happy birthday. My goodness, Bob sure is hanging in there in the great game of life. When I transitioned from Navy active duty to the Evening Tribune in late 1969, Bob then was the paper's military-beat writer (And Kip Cooper -- like Bob, a retired Navy chief petty officer -- had that beat on the Union). Seemed to me, both Kip and Bob knew their turf, competed hard, rewarded their readers in our oversized Navy town.

Many years later, I say "thanks" to them for that. Like Jack, I also wish Bob (who, no doubt, has hundreds of sea stories) would provide us with an update. I do wish him ... fair winds and following seas.
