Friend and mentor

          Good evening, 919 Gang.

          WAYNE MITCHELL writes:

When I arrived as a cub reporter at The Kansas City Star in 1967, I was assigned a desk near J. Harry Jones Jr., an investigative reporter who was an inspiration, a friend and a mentor to me. It was a privilege to work with him for more than a decade and, many years later, with his son, J. Harry Jones III, at The Tribune. My deepest sympathy to Harry and his wife, Cathy, on the death of his father at 96.

Take 1 of the Knowledge and Wisdom collection included favorites from my original pre-Internet cuttings from various print outlets, TV and radio transcripts, and humor books collected over the decades. The classics included Homer, Cicero, Confucius, Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Dr. Seuss.

I added a collection from 21st-century intellectuals found through AI research, most notably the best of Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Yuval Noah Harari. Take 2 closes with: Satirists and Performers, Page-Bound Wit, Millennial Fragments, and a Gen X Bonus.

Happy Birthday, Joe

          Good evening, 919 Gang.

          JERRY RIFE writes:

Although I've had a successful photographic career spanning more than 60 years, I haven't any formal training. I learned my craft on the street with other photographers. One of the most important of those was Joe Holly at the San Diego Union-Tribune. He introduced me to the wonders of natural light. Today is his birthday. Many happy returns, Joe, and many thanks. Here are some snaps of Joe and me duded up to cover a society ball.

Evanston obit reports the death of J. Harry Jones’ father, who had the same name. Our U-T reporter friend inherited amazing journalism genes.

REBER: I’ve worked with the three J. Harry Jones named in the obit. All exceptional reporters.
